Potty Training Readiness Quiz

March 29, 2026 by Amy Webb, Ph.D.

When it comes to potty training, timing can make a difference. That’s why this potty training readiness quiz exists: to help you quickly figure out if your child is ready right now, or if waiting might make things smoother. Start too early, and the process can drag on for weeks (or months). Start at the right time, and many children pick it up much more easily.

That’s why this potty training readiness quiz exists: to help you quickly figure out if your child is ready right now, or if waiting might make things smoother.

Although there are a lot of signs of readiness, researchers rarely agree on which ones are most important. However, when you consider all the major signs together, you can get an idea of your child’s stage. This potty training readiness quiz was developed based on a 2024 study published in the academic journal called Children.

What This Potty Training Readiness Quiz Measures

This quiz considers key areas that influence potty training success—not just age.

It looks at:

  • Physical readiness (like staying dry and motor skills)
  • Communication skills (expressing needs)
  • Cognitive development (following instructions, understanding routines)
  • Independence and behavior
  • Body awareness (one of the strongest predictors of success)

Instead of guessing, you’ll get a clearer picture of whether your child is actually ready to succeed.

This quiz includes the same questions used in that study, as well as other questions designed to assess readiness for potty training.

Answer a few quick questions to see if your child is ready.

How to Interpret Your Results

Once you finish the potty training readiness quiz, your score will fall into one of three ranges:

🟢 Ready Now

Your child is showing strong readiness signs across multiple areas. This is typically the easiest time to start potty training, with fewer setbacks and faster progress.

🟡 Almost Ready

Your child is close, but a few key skills may still be developing. Waiting a little longer can often make the process smoother and less frustrating.

🔴 Not Ready Yet

Your child may not be quite ready and that’s completely normal. Starting now could lead to resistance or a longer training process.

As with all aspects of parenting, you know your child best. This quiz can offer some insight into your child’s stage, but nothing is perfect. Rely on what you know about your child, their patterns, and your own intuition to decide the right time to start potty training.

This potty training readiness quiz is designed to give you clarity, but it doesn’t need to create pressure.

Every child develops at their own pace.

And when readiness, timing, and consistency come together, potty training becomes a whole lot easier.
